AWARD for EXCELLENCE

Three Rivers Housing Group had real cause for celebration when they received the award for building innovation in the North East at the Constructing Excellence presentation ceremony held in Newcastle. The winning project for Three Rivers was the redevelopment scheme at West Rainton where new, low energy, Lifetime Homes have been built to the Eco Homes standard of Very Good using Beco WALLFORM to build the insulated structures.

The project will now be considered for the national award in Constructing Excellence, but the Three Rivers team are already planning to build on their success with next year’s entry ( – Carbon Zero homes, perhaps? ).

About the West Rainton Development

Phase One of the development at West Rainton comprises four pairs of two bedroom dwellings, all constructed using the 313 mm thick version of the Beco Wallform system. David Brown, the Development and Regeneration Manager at three Rivers, said: "The whole project design team, including contractor OGR Ecohomes and Robin Miller of Beco Products Ltd, have worked well together to bring the scheme about on what is a very restrictive site and with very tight budgetary constraints. Such is our confidence in the team and the product that we have already started working on the next two proposed scheme designs."

The Housing Corporation´s Head of Investment in the Northeast, Julie Jacques, added: "I am delighted that the Housing Corporation has been able to work in partnership with Three Rivers Housing Association to enable the development of these new bungalows at West Rainton. Three Rivers have used an innovative construction method, which has delivered high quality, environmentally friendly housing and I am pleased that we will also be supporting the second phase the development. I hope that the people who live here will be very happy and comfortable in their new homes."

Phase two of the work will see another 10 being built by the same method, offering a U-value of 0.19 W/m²K. Referring to ICF´s potential to create zero carbon properties, Robin Miller of Beco Products Ltd confirms: "Ours was the first system to be granted a certificate by the German Passive Institute. We have built quite a number, particularly for our self-build clients: it is really just a question of getting all the different trades or disciplines to coordinate on delivering the design."

LAUNCHED - Insulating Concrete Formwork Association

Beco Products are a founder member of a new trade association, the Insulating Concrete Formwork Association (ICFA), which has been launched to promote the benefits of Insulating Concrete Formwork in the UK. The construction technique is already used extensively in the United States and on the Continent and offers considerable benefits that include fast construction, high thermal and acoustic insulation, design flexibility and reduced skilled manpower requirements.

Construction with ICF is about to come of age in the UK according to Chris Stride of the British Plastics Federation. It offers a modern method of construction that is well suited to meeting the fast construction and energy efficiency requirements of the Government, the design flexibility and buildability required by house builders and the high quality and low running costs required by homeowners. The ICFA will provide a focal point of information and expertise on ICF that will enable the UK construction industry to realise the potential of this proven construction technique.

Which WALLFORM System is best for my Project?

This is a common question that we are asked, and indeed, why not just simply choose the WALLFORM system with the most insulation for your project?

The reason is that normally the WALLFORM 375 and 438 systems provide more insulation than a conventional house design can effectively make use of. The real benefit of the 375 or 438 systems is that they provide an opportunity for Zero Energy or Passive House design.

When used in conjunction with other high performance building components and with careful attention to the overall building design, the 375 and 438 WALLFORM systems make it quite practical to build a home that remains comfortable to live in throughout the year without central heating. And on the Continent where Passive House design is more established, WALLFORM (aka isorast) is the most popular system being specified for such projects.

For more conventional building projects, in the UK the 313 system is rapidly becoming the most popular choice, since it easily meets not only the current Building Regulations, but also the improved insulation standards that will be required in 3-6 years time. The 250 system also satisfies Building Regulations and will continue to be the ideal choice for basements and Earth Sheltered Housing.

Site Support for First Time WALLFORMERS

Self-building, whether a new house or just a small extension, can be a daunting experience. Although Beco Products can supply equipment to make the WALLFORM building process easier, our support service is not limited to just providing temporary props!

As part of the package for any first time WALLFORMER, either trade or self-build, we provide assistance on site to start the assembly and the concreting process.

Although the WALLFORM building process is extremely practical and quick, the provision of assistance at the start of construction means there is someone on site to help and answer any questions.
